A still life is an arrangement of objects, usually food or flowers. Oudry, one of the finest artists in eighteenth-century Paris, specialized in painting nature, and here he combines a garden setting with three still lifes. He also painted portraits of the royal family’s hunting dogs, and the lively monkey reaching for the luscious grapes probably belonged to the king’s menagerie of exotic animals.
